Because of changes to supply chains and spikes in demand, the shipping industry changed during the pandemic. This change meant that the industry had to adapt and be more flexible, meaning logistic trends have changed.
Environmentally Friendly Shipping
The transportation of cargo is a big contributor to pollution and CO2 emissions. Tankers and ships being the method of transportation because of their efficiency in carrying large quantities of load. Due to their size, the tankers and ships use diesel, contributing to CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. To combat this, logistic trends will see a difference in introducing environmentally friendly shipping, using electric vehicles, and using more environmentally friendly packaging.
The Introduction of Drones
Drones have been lurking in the shadows of futuristic technology for a long time. Now, shipping and logistics have been in conversation about low-altitude drone delivery in America. This means that drones used for commercial purposes are allowed to take flight for deliveries in the last mile.
Normal Delivery Times
Before the pandemic, way back in 2019, international delivery was about five working days. During COVID-19, however, logistic trends saw higher shipping times, up to a staggering 16 days. Predictions suggest that delivery times will plateau, with international delivery averaging ten days.
Overall, it is undoubtedly that the pandemic will have changed the logistic trends. However, with the pandemic becoming less of a threat, we will see the introduction of environmentally friendly shipping, drone delivery, and normal delivery times.
